Services of erring DTC bus driver, conductor terminated

Following an accident involving its bus on Sunday in which two pedestrians were killed, the Delhi Transport Corporation on Monday terminated the services of the driver and the conductor and suspended the duty officer and the depot manager.

Delhi Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely and DTC Chairman-cum-Managing Director have expressed concern over the incident ordered an enquiry by a senior DTC officer.

“The CMD took a serious view of the rising trend of fatal accidents and directed all DTC officials that no one should be spared in case of fatal accidents involving DTC buses. He directed the depot managers to provide safe driving refresher courses to all the drivers. He also directed the training school in-charge to arrange a special training programme and invite specialised officials to educate the bus crew on the subject,” said a DTC spokesperson.

Special security drive

With a view to ensure safety and security of commuters and its buses, the DTC will be launching a special drive from Tuesday. DTC officials and other traffic supervisory staff would be deployed in the field from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to supervise the activities of DTC bus operation. Depot managers have also been instructed to check drunk drivers in their units at the time of out-shedding of buses, said the spokesperson.

Mr. Lovely also convened a meeting of senior DTC officials where he stressed “zero tolerance” for rash or negligent driving, overtaking and drunk driving, development of special mechanism to prohibit drunken driver or conductor on duty, constant watch on bus over-speeding through global positioning system and proper parking at terminals bus stops and stern disciplinary action will be taken against the defaulters.

He further said bus crew would be counselled by depot authorities through public address system in the depots to take special care including safe and lane driving while driving the buses, and drivers and conductors would be advised to ensure safe driving for accident-free service to commuters.
