Seer resumes fast against mining

May 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - Dehradun:

With illegal sand-mining continuing unabated in the Ganga in Haridwar district, Swami Shivanand of the Matri Sadan Ashram has resumed his fast.

Last month, he sat on a 22-day fast in protest. On April 15, the National Green Tribunal ordered that “no illegal, unauthorised, unscientific mining” should be allowed in Haridwar. However, mining continues unabated, Swami Dayanand of the ashram said.

On April 21, District Magistrate H.C. Semwal ordered that illegal mining be stopped, but within three days of the order, it was back to square one. Though another stop order was issued on May 18, the next day, Mr. Semwal issued orders to start mining as a precaution against possible flash floods, Swami Dayanand said.
