A 53-year-old security guard has been arrested for allegedly stealing Rs.27.95 lakh from the house of his employer, a businessman, here this past month. The police claim to have recovered Rs.8.50 lakh in cash from him.
Accused Hemant Chaudhary, a native of Bihar, had been working as security guard at the victim’s house for the past 17 years with a fake identity.
The New Delhi-based businessman lodged a complaint with the police on January 9, saying Rs.27.95 lakh in cash had been stolen from the boot of a car parked in the house two days earlier and that his guard S.K. Tiwari had been missing since.
Investigations revealed that the guard’s real name was Hemant Chaudary, following which a massive hunt was launched. Police teams mounted raids at Samastipur, Bhagalpur and Muzaffarpur to collect all possible leads.
Hemant was eventually arrested at Anand Vihar Inter-State Bus Terminus Monday while he trying to flee to Bihar. Rs.8.50 lakh in cash and some incriminating documents were seized from his person. Hemant purportedly told the police that he had purchased a piece of land for Rs.16 lakh from the stolen cash.
He further told the police that he worked as a Class IV employee with a fertilizer company for 16 years before coming to Delhi following an altercation with a neighbour. He started working as a security guard at the businessman’s house using a fake identity.
He won his employer’s trust over these years and became well-versed with every nook and corner of the house. He was well aware that huge amounts cash were usually kept in the house and hatched a plan to commit a theft. As per the plan, he sent his family to his native place four months before striking.
