The three BJP-led municipal corporations on Saturday passed a resolution to appeal to the Supreme Court seeking a six-month stay on the ongoing sealing drive to give relief to traders, amid ruckus in the House.

“The three municipal corporations of Delhi have resolved to appeal to the Supreme Court to provide to relief to the trader community of Delhi and we want a time period of six months. We will also request the court to direct the monitoring committee to halt the sealing of shops for the next six months” read the resolution.

Further, the resolution said that services of the Additional Solicitor General of India will be sought to represent the civic bodies.

A heated exchange between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and BJP councillors led to a chaotic proceeding and the mayors of the three corporations had to adjourn the House for 15 minutes. While the AAP councillors walked into the Well of the House, carrying banners against the BJP, their Congress counterparts ended up contributing to the chaos by attacking both the parties for politicising the issue.

Seek notice over roads

The joint session also passed a resolution to seek notification of 351 roads in various parts of Delhi by the city government.

Abhishek Dutt, leader of the Congress party in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said, “Category-wise conversion charges should be made, and smaller traders should not be asked to pay the same prices as others. You are asking for six months because of the upcoming elections. The sealings have been on for a month now. Why did you not place the proposal earlier?”

After the Supreme Court appointed a monitoring committee, a number of shops in various parts of Delhi have been sealed over the last one month.
