The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) plans to set up 100 science clubs in the primary schools it runs.
“The Vigyan Prasar Network [VIPNET] under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, has agreed to provide a helping hand and its expertise in setting up these clubs at the earliest,” said the SDMC spokesperson.
VIPNET has offered resource material and resource personnel for imparting training to teachers to enable them accelerate the pace of developing scientific interests in students, the spokesperson added.
Success stories
“These clubs will become part of the over 12,500 science clubs across the country and this will enable the students to share their scientific success stories. The clubs will not only disseminate information on science, but also provide easy access to VIPNET communication material, share ideas, gain insight and get national exposure,” he added.
“The SDMC is going to set up fully-functional 100 science clubs in 100 of its schools,” said Shailender Singh of the SDMC.
In order to make the clubs the centre of scientific constructive activities, the SDMC has also decided to organise orientation programmes and workshops for imparting comprehensive training to teachers.
“The selection of teachers and schools will be done by higher officials, including zonal and DDEs concerned, keeping in view the interest and keenness in involving themselves in the scientific endeavour,” he added. Mr. Singh said the clubs will turn out to be the local activity centres for children and help in answering their queries on science and technology.
