SDMC to provide free education to children of Pakistani refugees

May 17, 2013 11:39 am | Updated 11:39 am IST - NEW DELHI:

South Delhi Municipal Corporation is in the process of providing free education to the children of Hindu families which migrated from Pakistan in March this year. Over 500 families from Pakistan are now living as refugees at Bijwasan in South-West Delhi, an area which falls under the jurisdiction of SDMC. The refugees, who petitioned the Government for citizenship, had also requested the SDMC authorities for education to their children.

The corporation has since decided to deploy a mobile health van in the area to provide medical help. With this development, SDMC will be the first government agency to offer the refugees such facilities.

The offer from the corporation came after Chairman of its Standing Committee Rajesh Gehlot visited the refugee camps. SDMC officials said there was no legal issue in extending educational facilities to the refugees.

“The teachers of the local MCD schools are going there and facilitating the admission of 109 children of the Pakistani refugees. We got several requests from the Pakistani refugees to provide educational facilities to their children. There is nothing special about this because we already provide these facilities in the area,” said Mukesh Yadav, Director (Press and Information) SDMC.
