Lieutenant-Governor Anil Baijal on Saturday flagged off six mechanical sweepers in south Delhi’s Defence Colony market.

The machines will be used to clean roads under the jurisdiction of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).

The L-G also unveiled five litter collection machines, four suction machines and one mini-jetting machine.

“These litter collection machines have been introduced for the first time in Delhi. They will help in accelerating the pace of activities under the Swachh Bharat Mission,” said SDMC Commissioner Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel.

The L-G also asked the civic body to procure the remaining sanitation equipment at the earliest to make the city clean.

Mayor Kamaljeet Sehrawat, who was present on the occasion, said the SDMC had taken many initiatives to boost sanitation and urged the public in promoting cleanliness.

Mr. Baijal also took a round of the Defence Colony market and stressed for better public facilities there. He also asked the officials to turn the market into a role model for other markets.

“The L-G was also given a presentation of the proposed fully-automated multi-level car parking at the market. This parking lot will be constructed over an area of 914 sq. meters at an estimated cost of ₹13 lakh within a year,” said Dr. Goel.

Dr. Goel further said that the SDMC had been strictly following the development agenda given by the L-G.

“We have ensured uniform signage, adequate parking, developed parks, walking areas and beautification in markets and other public places. It is a matter of pride for us that the L-G has been reviewing the progress on a fortnightly basis,” Dr. Gupta stated.

The L-G concluded his visit with the inauguration of a development project underneath the Lajpat Nagar flyover.
