Scorching week ahead, says Met as heatwave grips Capital

Palam sizzles at 46 degrees Celsius; Safdarjung records 44

Heatwave conditions gripped the Capital with Palam sizzling at 46 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

The Safdarjung weather station which is considered the official recording of the city recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius that was four degrees above normal for the season. The minimum settled at 26.2 degrees Celsius.

Areas under Palam, Lodhi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar observatories recorded maximum temperatures of 46, 43.3, 44.3 and 44.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The Met Department said that temperatures are likely to remain as high for the rest of the week. It was an extremely dry day as well with the humidity hovering between 45% and 15%.

Past records

The hottest day in Palam recorded in May for the past 10 years has been 47.6 degrees Celsius recorded on May 18, 2010. At the Safdarjung station, the highest temperature was 45.5 degrees Celsius recorded on May 24, 2013.

The forecast for May 23 reads “partly cloudy sky with the possibility of thundery development”.

The Met Department said that the maximum and minimum temperature will settle between 44 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively.
