Sale of liquor through social networking sites busted

A racket in home delivery of foreign liquor that was operating through various social networking sites has been smashed by the Excise Intelligence Bureau of the of Delhi Government’s Excise Department.

Three persons have been arrested and as many as 294 bottles of different brands of foreign liquor and three cars have been seized.

The Department said the accused – Manoj Gupta of Okhla, Ravinder Singh of Tughlakabad and Vincent Nathan of Malviya Nagar – were operating through popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Orkut and Naymz. They had formed a community by the name of “Whisky on Wheels’’ and provided telephone numbers and e-mail identities to their customers for placing orders for home delivery of liquor.

EIB Assistant Commissioner of Police N. Tshering who received information about the racket constituted a team of three officers who subsequently mounted surveillance and conducted a joint raid with the Delhi police at Vasant Vihar, Sainik Farm and Saket resulting in the arrest of the three accused and recovery of the liquor.
