Sahara chief Subrata Roy will be provided a bed by the Tihar Jail authorities as he is above 60 years of age.

Mr. Roy (65), who has been lodged in cell number 4 of jail number 3, spent his first night in the prison by sleeping on the floor. According to jail authorities, he is being treated like a normal prisoner and given food that others get.

As per the rules in Tihar Jail, a prisoner above 60 years gets a bed to sleep on and so a bed was placed in Mr. Roy’s cell on Wednesday.

In good health

“On Tuesday, on arriving in the jail, Mr. Roy was examined by a group of doctors who had found him in good health,” said Tihar Jail spokesperson Sunil Gupta.

“On his first day inside the jail, he spent a lot of his time reading newspapers in his cell,” said a jail official.

Mr. Gupta added that Mr. Roy had sound sleep at night and woke up at normal time in the morning. After having his breakfast, which included tea and biscuits, he spent some time reading newspapers in his cell. Later, he was served lunch as per the jail schedule and menu.

Mr. Gupta maintained that no preferential treatment will be meted out to Mr. Roy. He said that Mr. Roy has been cooperating with the jail officials and has not placed any unacceptable demand so far.
