In a daring daylight heist, two men on a motorcycle allegedly shot a security guard of a cash replenishing van and robbed Rs.1.5 crore while the cash was being filled in an ATM in Kamla Nagar’s Bungalow Road on Saturday morning.

The guard, Satinder Singh, was shot twice in the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A senior police officer said: “The security guard and driver of the cash van were standing outside the ATM while the custodians were inside the booth when two men on a motorcycle came and shot the security guard twice in his head. When the guard fell on the ground, the assailants went inside the ATM and at gunpoint took away the bag from the custodians.”

“The assailants, one of whom was wearing a helmet, fled on a bike. Before leaving the place, they fired a shot in the air to scare the locals,” the officer added.

Though the security guard was armed he did not get any time to retaliate, the officer said.

An eyewitness immediately called the police control room and informed them about the incident. The incident has been captured by a local on his mobile phone. The police are checking the video clip and footage from the nearby CCTV cameras for clues.

According to sources, the robbers were familiar with the area and had a fair idea about the timings of the cash van. They had followed the cash van for some distance before reaching the crime scene.

A case of murder and robbery has been registered at the local police station and several teams led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police North, Madhur Verma, are probing the case.

The ATM where the incident took place is situated at a bustling spot in Kamla Nagar, just 100 metres away from Hans Raj College in Delhi University’s North Campus. It is also surrounded by a number of eateries.
