A 55-year-old businessman was shot dead, his nephew injured and robbed of Rs.25,000 by two motorcycle-borne men near the Tis Hazari metro station here on Monday.

The incident took place around 9 p.m. when Rajendra Jain and his nephew Paras, 30, were on their way to the metro station. They were crossing the road near the station when the accused intercepted them. The person riding pillion tried to snatch the bag containing the money from Mr. Jain. When he offered resistance, the accused fired at him from close range.

Mr. Jain sustained a bullet injury in the stomach and collapsed. When Mr. Paras tried to intervene, the robber shot at him too. Following this, the accused drove off with the loot.

The gunshots led to a scare among the passers-by. Soon after the police arrived and rushed the victims to a nearby hospital, where Mr. Jain was declared dead on arrival. Mr. Paras has been admitted to the hospital and is stated to be stable now. “He was shot in the chest,” said a police officer.

Enquiries revealed that Mr. Jain ran a wholesale stationary business in Sadar Bazar. He and his nephew were returning home to Model Town with the sale proceeds of the day when the robbers struck. Circumstantial evidence suggests they were trailed by the robbers.

The police have registered a case of robbery, murder and attempted murder and are trying to identify the robbers. Efforts are also being made to ascertain if someone close to the victims tipped off the criminals about the cash.
