In a suspected road rage incident, a 35-year-old businessman was allegedly attacked with “an iron rod 16 times and punched repeatedly” in south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. The accused have been arrested with the help of video footage that the victim captured on his camera.

In his statement to the police, Malviya Nagar resident Lalit Tageja said that he was on his way home around 10 p.m. on Thursday and was near a bus stop when two ‘seemingly drunk’ youths on a bike appeared in the middle of the road and blocked his way.

Mr. Tageja said that he brought his car to a sudden stop to let the youths pass, but one of the men got off the bike and started arguing with him.

The businessman said he tried to explain that he had applied his brakes in time and then requested them to let him go.

Hit from behind

The spat then allegedly turned violent and the man started abusing him.

As the two quarrelled, the other youth allegedly attacked Mr. Tageja from behind and hit him on the head with an iron road.

Mr. Tageja said that the attacker hit him around 16 times. The attackers then fled while the victim was taken to AIIMS with the help of a passerby. Mr. Tageja had to get 14 stitches on his head.

Later, the police were also informed about the incident, but Mr. Tageja accused them of a delayed response.

‘After seven hours’

“I repeatedly dialled the police control room just after the incident but no contact was made from Malviya Nagar police station. I went to AIIMS, but due to excessive bleeding my family took me to a private hospital. After seven hours, I finally got a call from an official from Malviya Nagar at 5 a.m. on Friday,” said Mr. Tageja.

The accused, Sandeep Singh and Ghuman Singh, are related and hail from Delhi. They have purportedly confessed to their involvement in the case.
