RJD MLA seeks death penalty for sister’s killers

An MLA belonging to the Rashtriya Janata Dal on Wednesday demanded death penalty for those who fatally injured his sister when she resisted their attempt to molest her in Bhojpur district on April 9. Shail Devi succumbed to her injuries late on Tuesday night in a government hospital in Patna.

Two of the five accused in the case, said to be auto-rickshaw drivers, surrendered in Ara civil court on Wednesday. They were remanded in judicial custody. All the top district police officials are camping at Ara.

“The State government should ensure that the accused get the death penalty. Only then will it be justice in the true sense for me and my family,” Saroj Yadav, RJD MLA from Barhara assembly constituency in Bhojpur district, told The Hindu over the phone. “I don’t have faith in the police, but I do have faith in my government,” he said.

An injured Shail Devi was admitted to a government hospital in Patna after she was found lying by the roadside in Bahiyara village under the Chandi police station on the night of April 9. She was on her way to Chandi market in an autorickshaw to consult an Ayurveda doctor when the incident happened. Later, she was taken to the district hospital from where doctors referred her to the PMCH.

“My mother told me that that the autorickshaw driver and four or five people inside started misbehaving with her,” said her son Krishna Yadav in an FIR lodged with the Chandi police. “When she told them that she was the sister of the Barhara MLA, they smashed her head with an iron rod and threw her out… they wanted to kill her to conceal their identity.”

The Opposition parties have said that there is total failure of law and order.

“I don’t have faith in the police,

but I do have

faith in my government”
