Lodging a complaint about a lost article will no longer mean going to the nearest police station and spending hours there, all thanks to the new mobile and web application — Delhi Police Lost Report.

The application was launched by Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde at a ceremony at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium here on Thursday.

With over six lakh such “information reports” being registered with the Delhi Police last year, the application will significantly reduce the burden on the police staff.

So far, a person was required to go to a police station to lodge a complaint about a missing article like a SIM card or an official document like a driving licence or an identity card to be able to obtain a letter — an “information report” — required for getting a replacement. The new application will, however, make the procedure hassle free as the complainant will be able to get the information report online or on his/her phone.

The application is currently available on Android phones. It will be made available on Windows and Apple phones soon. An Android user who wants to lodge a complaint can simply go to the Play Store, download the application named ‘Delhi Police Lost Report’. The user will only need to provide his/her name, mobile number and email id to register with the application. Once the user agrees to the terms and conditions of usage, a pop-up window will allow the complainant to register details about the missing article — like the date on which it was lost, details about the article and the place where it was lost. The user will then get a confirmation of the report, which can either be downloaded or saved as a softcopy. A printout of the same can be used for further legal formalities.

The application is also available on the Delhi Police website — www.delhipolice.nic.in.

The idea for the mobile application was proposed by Delhi Police Commissioner Bhim Sen Bassi. It was developed under the supervision of Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Dharmendra Kumar with the help of three software solutions companies.

The Delhi Police is also planning to develop an application for lodging First Information Reports.

Talking about the “revolutionary” step, Mr. Shinde said: “Today, the Delhi Police has taken an effective step, which is the first-of-its-kind undertaken by any police force in India, for the people of Delhi.”

The Police Commissioner said people face inconvenience when they go to register complaints about lost articles or documents. On many occasions, a person realises too late that he/she has lost something.

“Then the person does not know when the article was lost or under the jurisdiction of which police station, especially when he/she is travelling. The application allows a person to register a complaint while travelling. I have been told that with the help of this application, information registered through mobile or website will be produce a lost report [through/with] a digital signature in a few moments.”
