The 66th Republic Day was celebrated amidst tight security across Odisha on Monday.

A thick security cover with all the necessary scrutiny was put in place at almost all venues including at the State capital. This year’s security preparedness was intensified more in view of intelligence alert that Pakistan-based terrorist organisations were targeting Odisha, apart from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

Governor S. C. Jamir hoisted the National Flag at the Mahatma Gandhi Marg, venue of the State-level Republic Day celebration. He was received by Chief Secretary G. C. Pati and Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik.

The flag-hoisting was followed by a spectacular march past presented by the State police, school children and other civilian groups. The marching contingents were in perfect synchronisation with the beating drums. A total of 81 contingents and seven tableaux showcasing achievements of different organisations participated.

Daredevil shows by girls on six motorcycles and boys on 12 motorcycles by the NCC wing of Maharshi College were a major attraction of the Republic Day celebration. Troupes performed Sambalpuri-Dulduli, animal dance, tribal dance, Ghoomra dance, Ghoda Nacha and Laudi Dance at the venue.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik unfurled the Tricolour at the historic Barabati Stadium and took salute. He listed different welfare schemes launched by his government.

Mr. Patnaik said the government had taken up ambitious infrastructure projects like Biju Express Way and pro-poor programmes like Biju Pucca Ghar Yojna under which everyone will get a concrete house. “Odisha has become a happening State. We should take pledge to take forward development efforts of the government,” he said.

There was no report of any violence from the districts affected by the Left-wing extremists. Ministers and officials hoisted the Tricolour amidst tight security in the southern districts.
