Protesting against the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) programme introduced in Ravenshaw University in the mid-session of the ongoing academic year, the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the University on Saturday appeared for the examinations wearing black badges.
Although, the annual examinations had begun earlier, the CBCS examinations started from Saturday.
Leading from the front, students belonging to the All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation have been campaigning against the introduction of the CBCS programme. “When the authorities did not pay heed to our requests, we decided to appear for the examinations wearing black badges in continuation of our protests against the CBCS programme,” said a student on Saturday.
As per the UGC guidelines, in CBCS programme, apart from their main subjects, the students are required to choose two more subjects from a prescribed course as their elective subjects to learn them at their own pace and the assessment of these subjects is to be done in grades on a credit system. “Since the assessment of these subjects is linked to class attendance and submission of term papers, a lot of discrepancies are now being witnessed as teachers appear to be partial in awarding grades,” alleged a student adding that pets of teachers would get away with better grades even with poor attendance.
“Moreover, in the CBSE programme, a student is deprived of getting in-depth knowledge of the subject he chooses as elective,” said another student expressing concern that a balanced result cannot be expected through this programme.
The University authorities, however, have decided to delink the attendance of a student to the grade he obtains in this programme from next year. But official sources maintain the CBCS programme is going to stay as the basic idea of this programme is to look into the needs of the students so as to prepare him for higher education in India and abroad.
