Ramdev-led yoga event sets “world record”

Coinciding with the second International Day of Yoga, nearly one lakh people gathered at HUDA Grounds in Sector 12 here on Tuesday to perform yoga together and set a new world record, claimed a press statement issued by the Haryana government.

Led by Baba Ramdev, the programme started around 4 a.m. and ended at 7 a.m. Acharya Bal Krishna, BJP president Amit Shah, Haryana BJP in-charge Anil Jain and Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar were also present.

Other “feats”

The other “world records” during the event, according to Baba Ramdev, included 408 people performed the sirsasana and Rohtash Chaudhary doing 51 push-ups in one minute carrying a weight of 36.5 kg on his back. Also, nine people performed Surya Namaskar 1,500 times in 100 minutes.

He even announced the “world record” in a tweet: “Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust created new Guinness World Record, of 408 people doing sheershasan together @GWR #YogaDay [sic].”

Mr. Shah said yoga, a legacy of our saints and ancient culture, had began to disappear in the modern times, but Baba Ramdev had taken it upon himself to revive it.

He added that the Prime Minister’s proposal in the United Nations to celebrate June 21 as the International Day of Yoga was supported by 170 countries two years ago. It is now being observed in 193 countries, he said.
