Passengers travelling by the Delhi Metro railway had to face long delays on Thursday after rain disrupted train services.
According to Delhi Metro officials, rain caused the track circuits to drop at a couple of places on the Dwarka-Noida section. This in turn made it difficult for the trains to access the target speed and instead moved at a reduced speed of 20 kmph. “Though the problem was rectified soon, it led to bunching up of trains that took long to clear up,” said the official.
“Train services on Line 3 and Line 4, Dwarka-Noida and Dwarka-Anand Vihar were affected for about 25-30 minutes from 5-30 p.m. onwards because of the track circuit failure at some points in-between Dwarka Sector-12 to Kirti Nagar section. The track circuit failure occurred due to sudden variation in weather from dry to wet because of unexpected rain and hailstorm in this area. This led to the bunching of trains on the entire section resulting in delays,” the official explained.
Consequently passengers had to wait for over 30-35 minutes for the trains at several stations. Raj Kumarwho was travelling from Rajiv Chowk to Dwarka said: “The Rajiv Chowk station was very crowded. Trains were coming in late and were really crowded. The announcements weren't of much help either.”
Passengers travelling from Noida too faced difficulties as the sale of token at some stations was suspended briefly. Delhi Metro officials, however, maintained that normalcy on Line 3 and Line 4 was restored by 6 p.m. They said services on the other lines remained unaffected.
