The mercury plummeted in the Capital on Saturday on account of overnight rain and is likely to hover around the 20 degrees Celsius mark on Sunday. The weatherman has forecast more rain in the coming days.

Continual rain on Friday night led to a chill in the air, even though the minimum temperature rose three degrees above normal to 13.7 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department said cold winds accompanying the rain led to the chill in the air. The maximum temperature was recorded at 23.2 degrees Celsius, a degree below normal.

A Met Department official said western disturbance caused a massive low pressure build-up that led to strong winds through the day. Although the rain was not heavy, but it went on for over 16 hours, the official said. The impact of the western disturbances is expected to show signs of abating from Sunday afternoon, but rain with a possibility of a hailstorm is expected till then.

The city recorded 15.4 mm between Friday night and 8-30 am on Saturday and another 3.2 mm between 8-30 a.m. and 5-30 p.m.

The lowest maximum temperature for Saturday was recorded at Delhi University where it went down to 15.3 degrees Celsius, the Met Department official said, adding, the minimum temperatures has remained on the higher side because of the cloud cover that did not allow the heat to escape.

With rain and snow is expected in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till Sunday, mercury is expected to hover around 20 degree Celsius in the city. Light rains have been forecast for Sunday and thunder squall and hail may be possible in some areas.
