If you are travelling by train from the New Delhi railway station, beware of thieves. They may not only try to rob you while you are distracted, they may even drug you to rob you off your belongings. In two recent incidents, railway authorities have managed to nab thieves who stole valuables of other passengers. The culprits were identified, thanks to CCTV camera footage available at the New Delhi railway station.

In the first incident, Naveen Vishnani, a passenger travelling from New Delhi railway station to Amla in Tamil Nadu, filed an FIR with Government Railway (GRP) at Amla that while travelling in the Tamil Nadu Express, he was drugged and robbed by two unknown persons.

The complainant came to New Delhi railway station where he was shown the CCTV footage of the day when he was travelling and he managed to identify two accused. “As a result, security personnel in plain cloth and anti-drugging team apprehended the two accused while entering New Delhi Railway Station Tuesday,” a Northern Railway spokesperson said.

The accused, who have accepted their crime, were identified as Delhi residents Gagandeep Singh and Harpreet Singh. The two accused are being further interrogated and an enquiry is on.

In another incident earlier this month at the New Delhi railway station, a woman passenger complained that her valuables worth approximately Rs. 9 lakh were stolen from her purse at around 7 p.m.

“She was shown CCTV footage and was able to identify a woman opening her purse. A joint team of Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP apprehended the accused named Poonam, a resident of Sarai Kale Khan. The stolen items were recovered from her and given back to its rightful owner.

“The RPF, Delhi Division has been relentlessly working towards attainment of crime free surroundings in trains as well as at stations of the division. While pursuing criminals, it often becomes hard for RPF officials to identify miscreants based only on a first hand account received from the victims,” said the spokesperson.

“To solve this dilemma, the RPF has been CCTV footage to nab criminals, which often provide invaluable evidence leading to the identification of offenders and in turn can saves time during investigation,” he said.

Mr. Arun Arora, Divisional Railway Manager, Delhi has issued an advisory to further intensify the drive against such thieves and miscreants.
