Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi continued to reach out to sanitation workers for the second day in a row, pledging his support for their demands on Saturday.
Mr. Gandhi had met the striking safai karamcharis of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation on Friday and promised to support their stir for wages. The workers called off their strike on Friday evening, after the Delhi Government transferred funds to the cash-strapped EDMC.
According to Mr. Gandhi’s office, a group of workers visited his Tughlak Lane residence on Saturday to thank him for supporting their cause.
Asked whether the strike was called off after his interaction with workers, Mr. Gandhi said: “I don’t know whether it happened because of Rahul Gandhi or someone else, but I know if the safai karamcharis need my support, I will stand with them.”
He added that he was willing to “give hours, days, years, even a lifetime” to support the poor across the city, not just sanitation workers.
