PWD to use recycled water for horticulture

September 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Recycled water will be used by the Public Works Department for all its horticulture needs, leading to a saving of 1.75 million litres of groundwater every day.

Following suggestions by the Delhi Jal Board, the PWD will be including a provision in all its contracts for horticultural works making the use of recycled water mandatory from October onwards. The DJB said recycled water will be available at its wastewater treatment plants across Delhi for the PWD to use.

All the existing contracts regarding irrigation and horticulture will switch to the recycled water by October 5. DJB chairperson Kapil Mishra said the quality of treated water is good enough for most uses.

“To reduce the burden on potable water, it is important to use recycled water for non-potable purposes. Water recycling offers resources and financial savings. The DJB has tailored wastewater treatment to meet the water quality requirements of planned reuse,” said Mr. Mishra. The DJB sells recycled water from 17 sewage treatment plants, from where pipelines can be laid or tankers filled.
