An eco-friendly process used to clean a stream in Punjab would be used to restore the Yamuna in the Capital, Delhi Jal Board (DJB) chairperson Kapil Mishra said on Monday.

Mr. Mishra and a team of officials from the DJB were in Kapurthala to meet Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal, who spearheaded a campaign to clear rivers in Punjab. The Kali Bein rivulet in Punjab had become polluted over the years, but was cleaned using natural processes after the campaign.

Mr. Mishra said the decentralised natural treatment system, oxidation pond, settling tanks and processes used to remove floating material were studied. The DJB team also saw how flow was maintained in the river, which helped in self-cleaning. The DJB prepared a comprehensive ‘Yamuna Turnaround Plan’ last week and will be presenting it to Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti on Tuesday.

“We will ensure that the Yamuna is cleaned on a war footing and will ensure that Punjab’s Seechewal model of river cleaning is implemented in Delhi,” said Mr. Mishra.
