Under attack over the Shunglu Committee report, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said those involved in wrongdoings in CWG projects must be punished but at the same time care must be taken to ensure that innocent do not face any harassment.

“The government agencies are working.... The guilty must be punished but we must be careful to see that officials who are not involved in any wrongdoing and who put all hard work to make the event successful do not face any harassment,” Ms. Dikshit said.

She was asked to comment on the Prime Minister’s Office referring the Shunglu Committee findings to the Home Ministry for further action on alleged irregularities in certain Commonwealth Games projects implemented by Delhi Government.

The PMO has asked Home Ministry to send its reply on the queries raised by the Shunglu panel in works done by the city government controlled departments.

The Prime Minister-appointed probe panel has found procedural violations by Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna and the Chief Minister for alleged inadequacies in executing projects related to Commonwealth Games.

Rejecting the report, Delhi Government had termed the high-powered panel’s observations as a “product of paranoia” which is “full of contradictions” and “anomalies”.

In its brief report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in response to the findings of the Shunglu Committee, the city government last month had rejected almost all the findings of the panel and instead accused it of deliberately choosing to adopt logic of “convenience” in finding corruption in every policy and every tender of the government.

The BJP has been demanding resignation of Ms. Dikshit in the wake of the report by the high powered committee.
