A group of residents from Ghoshiya Colony in Mehrauli were detained and seven of them arrested by the police after they gathered near the official residence of Congress leader Ahmed Patel in the high-security Chanakyapuri area in New Delhi on Monday night to stage a protest in support of their demand for reconstruction of their shanties and mosque.
Around 30 protesters reached the residence of the Congress Rajya Sabha MP at 23 Mother Teresa Crescent around 9-45 p.m. and started raising slogans. Having received prior information about the planned protest, the Delhi Police had already deployed a big contingent, which included women personnel, there. “At 8-47 p.m. the South Avenue Police Post received information that the protesters had gathered at the Jorbagh Metro Station and were likely to proceed towards the MP’s residence,” said a police officer.
Since they did not have any appointment with the MP, the police intimated the group that no protests could be allowed in the area as prohibitory orders had been clamped in the area. However, when they did not pay heed to repeated warnings, the police took seven men into custody. They were booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The women protesters were later transported back to Mehrauli.
