Several students of Ansal University at Sector 55 here staged a demonstration outside its campus on Tuesday protesting against the alleged failure of the university to hire qualified staff, among others, and later sat on a dharna . The protest was led by the former students of the university.

Visiting faculty

Amit Nagar, a former B.Tech (civil) student, said that the university had not adhered to the norms of the University Grants Commission on appointment of its staff and hired unqualified faculty. “Besides a few regular staff, a majority of instructors teaching engineering students are visiting faculty and do not meet the criteria fixed by the UGC. The students passing out from the university have failed to get jobs as many important subjects are not even taught during the course,” said Mr. Nagar.

He also accused the management of extorting huge sums of money from the students on the pretext of late fee fine, debar fine and re-examination fee. “Recently, the university put up a notice for payment of fee a day before the last date. Since most of the students could not pay in time, they were forced to pay heavy fine. Similarly, large sums are charged in the name of re-examination fee,” said Mr. Nagar.

Leading the protest, Mr. Nagar said several students were supporting the protest but were scared to come out in the open fearing harassment.

University denies claims

Refuting all allegations, Ansal University, Public Relations Officer, Sona Vikas, said: “It is very unfortunate that such a protest has taken place outside the campus. A handful of former students came to create a nuisance for reasons best known to them. Despite being invited by the university authorities, no student came forward to put forth any grievance to the university management. We are happy to work with our students to resolve any issue and we look forward to having a good discussion.” She added that the university met the criteria fixed by the UGC on appointing the faculty.
