Producers distribute milk free of cost

May 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:18 am IST - BHUBANESWAR:

Two days after they spoiled 14,000 litres of milk protesting rejection by the State-owned Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation (OMFED), the farmers distributed milk free of cost here on Saturday.

Farmers were showing their utter displeasure over reported decision of OMFED to reduce milk procurement by 31 per cent.

“The OMFED has suddenly stopped procuring milk from us. For years, we have been depending on OMFED to sell the milk. Accordingly, we have invested time and money in this profession. If OMFED would not collect milk from us, we will be forced to sell it at much lower price,” said Sarat Behera, a milk farmer from Pipili area.

Mr. Behera said as the produce could not be sold in local market, farmers were facing huge challenge to feed their cows and buffalo.

On May 6, the Odisha Milk Farmers’ Association (OMFA) had poured milk on roads in protest.
