A day after she killed herself allegedly owing to her failed marriage due to her husband’s alternative sexual preferences, the parents of 31-year-old AIIMS resident doctor Priya Vedi claimed she had attempted suicide in the past, too.

Arrested for harassment and negligence soon after she was discovered dead, a city court sent her husband Dr. Kamal Vedi to 14-day judicial custody.

Her family claims she had consumed sleeping pills after a heated argument with her husband earlier this month. She had allegedly consumed 15 alprazolam pills following which, according to the family, Dr. Kamal had “forced her to consume six more tablets”.

On Saturday, Dr. Priya committed suicide by slitting her wrist at a hotel in Central Delhi’s Paharganj. Before taking the extreme step, Priya wrote on Facebook and also left a suicide note alleging that Dr. Kamal was a gay.

Priya’s father Ram Babu Verma has told the police that she had called him around 12.30 p.m. on Saturday and told him to come to the Capital. “Priya had told her father that her husband and in-laws were torturing her,” said a police officer.

Mr. Verma claims that Priya was crying and cut the phone line.

“I kept trying to contact Priya again on her mobile phone, but she did not respond,” Mr. Verma has claimed in his statement before Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Karol Bagh) Chandra Shekher.

Mr. Verma immediately left his native village in Jaipur and reached Delhi around 11:15 p.m.; met Priya’s father-in-law Mahesh Bedi; and went to the Defence Colony police station, where Dr. Kamal had already filed a missing person complaint. There, the trio were told that Dr. Priya had been traced and Kamal had gone to meet her at a hotel in Paharganj.

The police took Mr. Verma to Hotel Presidency in Paharganj where the door of room number 302 was broken open in their presence and Dr. Priya was found dead in the bathroom and a suicide note was recovered from the room.

Dr. Priya, an anaesthetist at AIIMS, had married dermatologist Kamal in March, 2010. Mr. Verma said the family got to know about the marital discord when her father-in-law called him around two years ago stating that the couple was not on speaking terms because his daughter turned ‘abnormal’ at night.

Last month, Dr. Priya informed her family members that the marital discord was due to Dr. Kamal being a gay. It is alleged that Dr. Kamal started mentally torturing her after she learnt of his sexual orientation.
