The North Delhi Municipal Corporation on Saturday suspended five employees, including the Principal, in connection with the rape of a seven-year-old girl in a school.
The school inspector, class teacher, attendant and chowkidar were the others who received suspension orders from Corporation Commissioner P.K. Gupta.
Mr. Gupta constituted a five-member committee to probe the incident. The committee, which would submit its report within three days, was asked to suggest measures for strengthening the safety of students in municipal schools.
The police have questioned more than 200 people, including the school teachers and staff, but failed to zero in on the culprit. “The culprit is suspected to be someone having easy access to the school. He could be the staff or known to the staff. We are questioning every possible man,” said a senior police officer.
The victim, a Class II student, had gone to collect her midday meal on Thursday when she was taken to a vacant classroom on the first floor of the school and raped.
The incident came to light when the victim’s parents noticed injuries and took her to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where doctors confirmed the assault. The police were alerted on Friday.
The victim’s father alleged that the culprit tied his daughter’s hands and gagged her with a piece of cloth before raping her.
Go on the rampage
The incident triggered violent protests in the area as locals went on the rampage, damaging buses and vandalising hospital property.
