In two separate cases of power theft, a special court in Patparganj remanded three people, including owners of an ice cream factory, to prison for allegedly stealing electricity.
According to power distribution company BSES officials, one of the accused is the owner of a jeans anodising factory and had also attacked a BYPL enforcement team during the power theft raid.
Cumulatively, the three have been penalised Rs.1.6 crore by BYPL. Their bail applications were also rejected by the special court.
“Acting on a tip-off, a BYPL enforcement team raided a unit in Ghonda on January 19 this year and found that the factory was stealing 203 kW by way of direct theft. There was no meter found on the site,” said a company spokesperson.
He claimed that the accused along with a few of his friends and henchmen surrounded BSES officials and launched an attack on them, injuring them. A penalty of Rs.1.5 crore was levied on the accused.
When the accused failed to deposit the penalty within the stipulated time frame, BYPL lodged two FIRs against the accused – one for power theft and other for injuring its personnel while on duty.
“On November 30, the Delhi police arrested the accused Nirbhai Sharma and presented him before the special court for electricity-related cases in Patparganj. The court rejected his bail application and sentenced him to jail,” the spokesperson said.
In another case, the special court remanded two brothers, Harish alias Pappu and Surender alias Bittoo and owners of an ice cream factory in New Seelampur, to prison.
“On September 30, a BYPL enforcement team had raided the ice cream factory in New Seelampur and caught it stealing 47 kW of electricity. The accused was levied a penalty of Rs.9.5 lakh. Subsequently, when the accused failed to pay the fine within the stipulated timeframe, an FIR was lodged again them,” the spokesperson said.
