A number of areas in the city on Wednesday faced power cuts for varying durations due to disruptions in distribution network caused by kite flying.
A BSES official said 14 incidents of tripping of power supply line had been reported from various parts of the city.
The affected areas are Mayapuri, Janakpuri, Mukherji Park, Udyog Nagar, Paschim Vihar, Nand Nagari, Yamuma Vihar, Karkardooma, Minto Road and Preet Vihar. BSES had issued an advisory last week in which they had asked people in the Capital to fly kites carefully to guard against disruption in power supply.
Officials said that power cuts occurred due to kite strings which get entangled in power transmission lines, and several of these incidents had been reported in the run up to the Independence Day.
According to officials, tripping of just one 33/66 KV overhead line can disrupt power supply to over 10,000 residents of an area.
Metal or glass-coated ‘manjhas’ which are used by many people to fly kites are a good conductor of electricity and this leads to tripping and power supply disruption besides the risk of possible electrocution.
Last year also there had been at least 23 incidents of tripping of power supply on the Independence Day due to kite flying.
