Three policemen were suspended on Tuesday for allegedly thrashing a BJP Kanti Nagar councillor’s nephew and four other family members in connection with a road rage case in Shahdara district’s Krishna Nagar a day earlier, the police said.

“The three policemen involved in the case have been suspended with immediate effect. A vigilance probe has also been initiated against the personnel — an assistant sub-inspector and two constables,” said DCP (Shahdara) Nupur Prasad. The five men, including two nephews and two brothers-in-law of councillor Kanchan Maheshwari, were allegedly thrashed on a street and at the police station on Monday night.

Ms. Maheshwari alleged the policemen assaulted her family because her nephew Rishabh Maheshwari had intervened in an argument over a minor accident between his former teacher’s kin and two men riding a bike.

“My nephew was returning home around 10.30 p.m. when he spotted some car passengers involved in an altercation with two men whose bike had been hit by the car. He recognised the car passengers as his former teacher’s family members and intervened,” said the councillor.

After the matter was resolved, the councillor said, Mr. Maheshwari started walking home when the two bikers — a bouncer and a policeman in plain clothes — overpowered and assaulted him.

She claimed that three more policemen reached the spot in a police vehicle, and together they pushed her nephew inside a restaurant and continued assaulting him. The councillor was in Defence Colony with her husband at time of the incident.

Thrashed again

Other members of her family also reached the spot, where they too were allegedly assaulted by the policemen. Ms. Maheshwari claimed her family members were taken to the police station and thrashed once more.

A group of BJP supporters reached Krishna Nagar police station and staged a protest against the policemen.
