To ensure smooth movement of traffic after a spell of rain, the Delhi Police has written to the Public Works Department (PWD) to take immediate remedial measures to help drain water from 10 stretches that have a history of chronic waterlogging.
Traffic was thrown out of gear on Wednesday following heavy rain that caused waterlogging on several roads across the city, including Lutyens’ Zone.
390 spots identified
A senior police officer said a letter was sent to the PWD on Wednesday to remind the civic agency that some of these stretches were in the list of 390 waterlogging-prone spots that the force had sent the department in February.
“It was noticed that rain over the past two days led to waterlogging on these stretches. It’s important to flag the issue,” the officer added.
“We had complied a list back in February... We had further classified these stretches according to the extent of the problem. The list was made on the basis of a field study conducted during last year’s monsoon and the incidents of waterlogging that were reported,” said the officer.
‘Had classified stretches’
The classification, he added, was in three categories.
“The first where waterlogging was reported three times or more last year, the second where it was reported twice and then the rest in the third category. They [the PWD] had their task cut out for them and had to carry out repairs. Some of the stretches we had identified in the first category have faced waterlogging and traffic issues over the past two days,” said the officer.
City-wide problem
While the list of the 10 stretches was not available, the city continued to grapple with waterlogging and movement was hindered.
Obstruction in traffic due to waterlogging and potholes was reported from all across the city, including the carriageway from Hanuman Setu towards ISBT, from Moti Bagh towards Dhaula Kuan, near Satya Niketan metro station and Vikas Marg (both carriageways).
