Police nab young men performing stunts on mobikes during nights

July 11, 2011 12:39 pm | Updated 12:39 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Three young motorcycle riders who were allegedly performing stunts along the India Gate roundabout in the early hours of Sunday have been challaned for dangerous driving and their licences seized by the Delhi Police.

Trap laid

In the wake of reports about motorcyclists performing stunts on roads at night and endangering the lives of other road users, a team from the Tilak Marg police station laid a trap for them around India Gate. “Once we tried to catch some of them, but one of them drove into the other carriageway to escape. The motorcyclist could have injured himself or any other road user. Hence, this time we decided to put barricades and lay a trap,” said a police officer.

The policemen deployed along the C-Hexagon spotted the motorcyclists around 2 a.m. and the moment they entered the stretch where the barricades had been placed, both sides were blocked immediately to prevent their escape. The three finally landed in the police net.

“They were identified as Sunny, Aman and Himanshu. All the three are in their early 20s. We have sent a recommendation for cancellation of their licences. We have been taking action against such persons,” said the officer, adding that the drive against the menace would continue.

About four years ago, the police had arrested 45 motorcycle riders on charges of rioting, assault and damaging public property. That incident also took place in the early hours when a battery of young motorcyclists went on a rampage performing dangerous stunts on the roads in Connaught Place.
