Serving as an informer for the local police cost the life of a differently-abled man. He was shot dead outside his house in South-East Delhi’s Jaitpur last Thursday.

A notorious snatcher had planned and executed the murder with his associates after he found out that Dilip Kumar had recently informed the police about his activities, M.S. Randhawa, DCP (South-East), said on Tuesday.

Registered cases

The motive was established after the police arrested the primary suspect, Monu, and his co-killers, Vikram and Deepak.

Monu and his associates turned out to be notorious snatchers involved in 66 registered cases of snatching in Southern part of the Capital.

Dilip had been serving as a police informer for more than a year. When the local police decided to go after snatchers in the area, they approached Dilip for information on Monu and his gang. Dilip obliged the police and shared all that he knew about the gang.

Also residents of Jaitpur, Dilip and Monu were involved in a quarrel over a petty issue around Diwali last year.

But, it was only around a week ago that Monu got to know about Dilip’s role as a police informer and hatched a murder plan.

Masked men

On Thursday evening, Dilip received a phone call from an unknown number, asking him to step out of his house.

As soon as he did, three masked men on a motorcycle approached him and fired at him. Dilip collapsed as a result of multiple gun shots even as the assailants fled. The victim was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Questioning of Dilip’s family members and friends not only revealed that he had received a phone call before his murder but that he also had a quarrel with Monu last year. A raid was conducted at Monu’s house, but he was absconding.

Tip-off

He was finally nabbed from his friend’s home based on a tip-off. He confessed to his role in the murder and revealed the hideouts of his associates Vikram and Deepak.

At Monu’s instance, a pistol that was allegedly the weapon of offence was recovered.

The police also recovered 22 stolen mobile phones, including one that was used to lure Dilip out of his house.

This mobile phone was reported snatched from Lodhi Colony a few weeks ago. Dilip lived with his family and did odd jobs for a living. His right hand had been amputated a year ago following a road accident.
