A day after former INLD MLA Bharat Singh was shot dead at a private function in Najafgarh, Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi said that the police have accurate information about some people involved in the incident and they will soon make arrests. He confirmed that the incident was the result of an ongoing gang war between land-grabbers in Najafgarh.

Some people have been detained in this connection, but no one has been arrested so far. Sources said that the police suspect involvement of a local criminal, Sandeep Mental, who is an active member of the rival gang.

“We have specific leads in connection with the case and we will get a breakthrough soon,” Mr. Bassi told reporters. CCTV footage recorded in a camera installed in the front of the banquet hall where the incident occurred shows a man running out of the hall and then riding off on his bike parked on the opposite side of the hall.

Teams of the Special Cell and the Crime Branch are working along with the local police. Mr. Singh was shot dead and two of his associates were critically injured when six to eight men opened indiscriminate fire at them in Najafgarh on Sunday evening. Mr. Singh was the younger brother of local strongman, Krishan Pehalwan, who has more than two dozen criminal cases registered against him. Eyewitnesses claimed that Mr. Singh was shot in the head from a very close range.

A similar attack had occurred on Mr. Singh in June, 2012outside his office in South-West Delhi.
