“Not much progress made in the case as the family is in a state of shock”
A day after the wife and minor daughter of a businessman were brutally stabbed to death in their house in Rajouri Garden here, the police on Sunday said the motive behind the murders appeared to be “other than robbery”.
“The initial findings of the post-mortem report have confirmed that the wounds inflicted on the victims were deep. While Gurpreet Kaur had been stabbed several times on the neck, wrist, stomach and chest, the girl had received cuts on the wrist and neck. Though the assailants made off with some cash and jewellery as per the family, it appeared that the real motive was to commit the murder,” said a senior police officer.
Gurpreet (30) and her daughter Jasmine (8) were found murdered in Manak Vihar Extension when Gurpreet's uncle Baldev Gill, who is an auto financier and stays on the ground floor, sent his domestic help to their flat in the evening. Gurpreet's two-year-old daughter, who was perhaps sleeping during the incident, was spared by the assailants.
The bodies were handed over to the family on Sunday after a post-mortem was conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital.
“As the family of the victims is in a state of shock following the tragedy, not much progress could be made in the case so far. But the preliminary investigation has suggested that the relations between Gurpreet and her husband Gurpreet Singh were not strained. The interrogation of Gurpreet's husband and her relatives will throw more light on the case,” said a senor police officer, adding no one was given a clean chit so far.
“We have recovered some hair from Gurpreet's hand suggesting struggle between the victim and the assailants. The crime team has been asked to preserve it for future DNA testing,” the officer said.
