The Delhi police have denied permission to Dalit rights activist Jignesh Mevani to hold a public meeting in New Delhi district area on Tuesday.
The police said that the National Green Tribunal had already banned all protests and dharnas around Jantar Mantar. In that case there is no provision to provide any permission for any public meeting.
Cops on alert
A senior police officer said that in view of security arrangements in the Capital ahead of the Republic Day parade on January 26, no public gathering will be allowed in New Delhi district area.
The situation is being monitored by Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik. He has instructed all district DCPs and station house officers to be on alert.
The police said that intelligence officials are also keeping tabs on the situation. The rally organisers said that students from universities and colleges in Delhi, women’s groups, teachers’ associations and activists associated with Mevani from across the country are expected to attend the ‘Yuva Hunkaar Rally’ in the Capital.
“Maximum mobilisation of forces had been done at the border and after proper frisking, protesters would be allowed to enter the city. The people coming from western UP and Haryana will be stopped at the border,” added the official.
The police said that they have made necessary arrangements for any situation. “The Delhi police will make all necessary safety and security arrangements if people gather for a rally,” said Dependra Pathak, Delhi Police chief spokesperson.
