The glamour industry finally seems to be warming up to women with curves.

Breaking the “perfect body” myth, plus-size women have already set into motion a change in attitudes. Dum Laga Ke Haisha is one such example. Actor Bhumi Pednekar was lauded for her portrayal of the lead character, who did not have either an hourglass or size-zero figure.

Elated

While plus-size models are not unheard of in other parts of the world, India is still warming up to the concept. In fact, plus-size models will walk the ramp for the Lakme Fashion Week, being organised in Mumbai between August 24 and 28. The models set to participate in the show are an elated lot.

“People have finally started realising that women come in all shapes and sizes, and that they do not need to look a certain way to look good,” said Tanvi.

The model added that people should just focus on being healthy. “People should understand that curvaceous women are as healthy as any other woman. They should not be looked at in a negative light. I am very happy that plus-sized women are becoming a part of the glamour industry,” she said.

Designers too welcomed the news.

Shilpa Chavan, who will style the show in Mumbai, said such steps will open more options in clothes for plus-size women. “I believe a show like this will open doors for more such events in the future. It gives a message to women — be proud of who you are.”

Nandita Abraham, executive vice-president, Pearl Academy, said: “We are finally recognising that people of different sizes exist. So that way, yes, this is a new beginning because plus-size women were never really targeted.”

She added that such initiatives will encourage more brands in India to cater to all body types.

Designer Rahul Mishra, however, felt it was not so much about the models, but the brand that is trying to showcase its collection.

“Of course it is a positive step to have plus-size models walking down the ramp. But at a fashion week, it is not so much about the model but the brand that wants to showcase its product. If brands designing clothes for larger women want to showcase their collection, they will use plus-size models. But yes, such things do not happen often in India and it is a welcome step.”
