Pile-up near Akshardham Temple, no one injured

March 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - New Delhi:

The drivers and occupants of half a dozen cars had a narrow escape during a pile-up reported from near the Akshardham Temple in East Delhi on Saturday evening.

At least the occupants of one of the vehicles damaged in the accident owe their lives to air bags that popped open in the nick of time following the impact, the police said.

According to the police, the accident occurred late night when a Honda City, which had a woman and a child on board in addition to the driver, swerved from its lane and rammed the concrete road divider.

“The occupants of the sedan told us that they couldn’t precisely recall what happened and remembered just five serial collisions that followed each other within a few seconds of the initial impact,” said a police officer.

The sudden halt of the sedan caught the drivers of four vehicles in its tow completely off guard with each ramming the rear of the car in front one after the other.

In the meantime, a police van patrolling the area reached the spot and conducted an inquiry.

The occupants of the vehicles were offered medical help, but chose not to opt for it.

“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the law and are investigating the matter to ascertain whom the blame lies with,” the officer added.
