‘Petrol pump should have been closed for repairs'

January 18, 2012 12:25 pm | Updated October 18, 2016 03:26 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Five persons, including a woman, were injured in a fire that broke out at a petrol-cum-LPG filling station in Munirka here on Monday. A Delhi Jal Board truck was also gutted.

The injured have been identified as Narender, Javed, Jolly Matthew, C.M. Matthew and Dayanand.

While Narender and Javed sustained 40 per cent and 80 per cent burns respectively, the remaining three escaped with only 4-5 per cent burns.

‘Negligence'

According to the police, repair work was going on at the filling station to fix leakage in the underground LPG tank when a spark in a car caused the fire. “It is a case of sheer negligence. The incident could have been avoided had the petrol pump authorities shut it for vehicles during the repair work,” said a senior police officer.

The fire broke out around 8-25 p.m. and it took 10 Delhi Fire Service tenders over four hours to douse the flames.

“As the fire had broken out in an underground tank, there was a possibility of it spreading to the nearby areas. People living in the nearby slums were, therefore, asked to vacate as a precautionary measure. Even the adjacent petrol pump was closed for operation,” the officer said.
