In what could be a nightmare for commuters in the National Capital Region, the Delhi Traffic Police will conduct trials on the dedicated lanes for Commonwealth Games-related traffic during peak hours for two days beginning this Monday.
While the trials will be carried out between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Monday on four stretches identified by the traffic police, the following day traffic restrictions on these stretches will be imposed from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The trails will be conducted on the following stretches: Ring Road (Chandgi Ram Akhara to Mall Road), National Highway-24 (Ring Road crossing to Ghazipur crossing), Maa Anandmai Marg to Dr. Karni Singh Stadium via Mehrauli-Badarpur Road and Panchsheel Marg-Sardar Patel Marg intersection to Mother Teresa Crescent up to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
The police have advised people to avoid the Commonwealth Games lanes during the trials and familiarise themselves regarding the pattern of traffic movement during the upcoming event. “There will be enough signages announcing the commencement of stretches during the trials. Traffic police personnel will also be deployed in adequate numbers to guide the commuters,” said a senior Delhi Traffic Police officer.
The traffic police carried out two rounds of trials on different stretches in the Capital earlier this month causing traffic jams on the roads in and around the Capital. The first round of trials was conducted on September 4 and 5 and the next on September 8 and 9.
The exclusive lanes for Commonwealth Games-related traffic will remain out of bound for the general traffic from September 20 till the Games are over. Any violation would attract a fine of Rs. 2,000 or impounding of the vehicle.
“The restrictions on the lanes for Commonwealth Games-related traffic will usually be in force from the first event of the day to the last event. To cause minimum trouble to commuters, the restrictions will be lifted when there is no Games-related traffic movement,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg.
