Patiala House violence: charge sheets filed

July 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - New Delhi:

Five months after some journalists and others were beaten up at the Patiala House Courts complex, the Delhi Police have filed three separate charge sheets in connection with the case. The incident took place when Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar was to be produced in court in the sedition case filed against him in February.

BJP MLA named

The first charge sheet names advocates Vikram Chauhan, Yashpal Singh and Om Sharma, who were among the group of lawyers that attacked the journalists waiting inside the court room, as the accused. The second charge sheet has been filed against BJP MLA O. P. Sharma, who was caught thrashing a CPI worker on camera. The third charge sheet again names advocates Vikram Chauhan and Yashpal Singh.

Lawyers charged

The three lawyers have been charged for rioting under sections 147, 149, 323 and 506 of the IPC, while the BJP MLA has been charge sheeted under sections 323, 341 and 506 of the IPC.

The court is likely to take up the matter on September 22.
