Two men suspected to have provided logistical support and helped Jabbar, who was recently arrested in the Capital on espionage charges, obtain a passport and a driving licence on forged documents have been arrested in Lucknow by a joint team of the Delhi and the U.P. police. They were produced on Tuesday in a Delhi court that remanded them to seven-day police custody.
The accused, known to their friends as Ashu and Chand, were produced in the chamber of a Tis Hazari judge who sent them to police remand till November 23. They have been booked under the Official Secrets Act, for alleged forgery of documents and other relevant provisions.
The two were arrested in a joint operation by the Special Cell of the Delhi police and the U.P. police’s anti-terror cell on Monday. During interrogation, they purportedly confessed that they knew Jabbar and had provided him logistical support, despite knowing that he was a Pakistani national. Investigations revealed that Ashu worked as a tout at the passport office in Lucknow and Chand, who has no regular source of income, occasionally dealt in properties.
The two came into contact with Jabbar through a common link, who asked them to help him get identification documents. They were offered money for the job. Lured by the prospect of making some quick buck, they allegedly agreed.
