Over 500 students were hired and more than 25 international offers were received during the first five days of the ongoing placements at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi . The institute said over 200 offers, including 20 international ones, were made on the inaugural day itself.

Students also bagged over 150 pre-placement offers, of which over 80 were accepted. A few students opted for the institute’s deferred placement available for those interested in pursuing their start-up dreams, IIT-Delhi said in a statement.

Anishya Madan, placement officer, training and placement cell, IIT-Delhi, said, “Our system takes the filters of the domain of the company, the job profile and student preferences into account. We try to ensure that all kinds of job profiles get a fair representation in the roster. We also strive to ensure that all kinds of students get a chance to be interviewed.

The international offers came from companies in Singapore, Hong Kong, United States, Amsterdam and Japan. Among international offers, a maximum of six offers were from Microsoft on day one. Among national recruiters, 30 offers came from INTEL.

High-value packages

IIT-Delhi has decided, as a policy, not to mention high-value packages in its placement information. It felt that undue publicity given to packages have the effect of devaluing national placements over international placements as well as core jobs over finance and consulting jobs.

I. N. Kar, professor incharge of placements, IIT-Delhi, said placements this year started on a very optimistic note and he hoped that the trend continues for the rest of the placement season. Over 300 organisations across sectors offering over 500 job roles have already registered for placements. Phase one of the placements will continue till December 15 and phase two will start from January 2018.
