Opposition gearing up to check-mate govt. on Minister

Demand ouster of Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Minister Sanjay Kumar Das Burma from the Council for his alleged role in chit fund scam

April 26, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - BHUBANESWAR:

The Opposition parties are likely to embarrass the Biju Janata Dal government demanding the ouster of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Sanjay Kumar Das Burma in the second leg of the Budget session of the State Assembly starting on Tuesday.

The Opposition parties have been demanding Mr. Das Burma’s ouster from the Council of Ministers in view of his alleged links with several companies involved in the mega chit fund scam.

Although Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has not paid any heed to the demand so far, legislators of both Congress and BJP are likely to stall the Assembly proceedings even as Mr. Patnaik is scheduled to return to the State Capital from New Delhi only on Wednesday.

CBI probe demanded

Senior Congress leader Lalatendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra has been demanding a CBI probe into his allegations against his main political rival Mr. Das Burma since the past few weeks. Interestingly, what has made the situation embarrassing for the Chief Minister is that several senior BJD leaders have been making statements relating to Mr. Das Burma’s alleged involvement in the ponzi scam.

The BJD leaders are making statements on the issue despite Mr. Patnaik warning them to refrain from it a few days ago. The Opposition parties are also ready to raise tough questions in the Assembly about the alleged links of some ruling party legislators with the Cuttack-based gangsters who have been recently arrested in various cases.

The alleged failure of the State government in dealing with the drinking water crisis in many regions in the wake of the severe heat wave prevailing in the State is also likely to be raised in the House by both the Opposition parties. The unscheduled power cuts in remote areas during the heat wave conditions will also be raised.
