October 21, 2014 01:52 pm | Updated May 23, 2016 06:40 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Delhi Government has finally paid Rs.1 lakh as compensation to the family of a 17-year-old boy who had died at the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital here in 2011 because he was kept waiting in the ambulance by the hospital authorities for around two hours due to non-availability of a ventilator.

An inquiry into the death due to medical negligence had earlier found that such incidents at the hospital were common because of non-availability of ICU and super-speciality services. It also said that the medical officer on duty at the time the patient was brought there had shown gross insensitivity towards him and failed to respond to the request by the junior resident doctor accompanying him.

On the basis of the material on record and the inquiry report, the Commission had held that it was a clear case of medical negligence involving violation of human rights of the patient, Jeetram.
