After using Facebook and Twitter to successfully book traffic violators in the city, the Delhi Traffic Police on Friday started a WhatsApp number to get hold of violators through crowd sourcing.
The WhatsApp number 8750871493 can now be used by the public to send complaints to the Traffic Police.
“If you want to complain about any traffic violation, unauthorised parking or overcharging, refusal, misbehaviour by auto or taxi, faulty traffic signals, or any other traffic-related issues, you may send a photograph or short video clip with details such as your name, place, date, time etc. We assure you of prompt action on your complaint and feedback about the action taken,” Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said.
Launching the facility with a punchline ‘Mobility with Safety’, the Delhi Traffic Police believe that the WhatsApp number will be more successful than their Facebook and Twitter pages because more people use WhatsApp.
The Delhi Traffic Police had also earlier urged people to come forward and complain about “illegal parking” in the city through their Facebook page, traffic helpline numbers 1095 and the anti-corruption WhatsApp helpline number 9910641064.
“We want people to tell us about illegal parking so that we can curb this menace in the city. If anybody is charging money for getting one’s vehicle parked and not giving a receipt for that, they can tell us about such activities through the Traffic Police’s Facebook page, WhatsApp anti-corruption helpline and traffic helpline,” Mr. Chander had earlier said.
Illegal parking and its mafia is a huge menace in a city where people have been killed over parking space in the recent past. Mr. Chander himself led a crackdown against illegal parking in East Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar area recently.
