Allegedly involved in 300 cases of car-jacking, theft and attempt to murder

Notorious auto-lifter Manoj Bakarwara (36), who is allegedly involved in 300 cases of car-jacking, theft and attempt to murder during the past 14 years, has been arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police along with his two accomplices.

Manoj, a resident of Bakarwara village in the jurisdiction of Mundka police station, carried cash rewards of Rs.50,000 each on his head announced by the Delhi Police and the Haryana Police.

Manoj was arrested by a team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Bhisham Singh near Ghazipur flyover on National Highway-24 here in the early hours of Monday following a tip-off.

A luxury car he was travelling in was found to be stolen from Saket. A .32 bore pistol of US make, two magazines and eight cartridges were allegedly seized from his possession.

Two of his accomplices, Rajkumar (19) and Jaidev (20), were arrested near Anand Vihar bus stand on Monday afternoon at his instance. The two had come to take the delivery of the stolen car. Both are residents of Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav remanded Manoj and his two accomplices to 10 days police custody. Mr. Yadav remanded the trio to allow the police to probe their “possible involvement in a larger conspiracy”. The CMM also allowed an application moved by the police praying that Manoj be kept handcuffed during interrogation as he was of “a desperate nature” and had injured a sub-inspector during an encounter with the police last year.

Manoj was first arrested by the Delhi Police in 1998 in connection with an auto-theft case. He again took to auto-theft on his release and was arrested in 2003. He was arrested by the Delhi Police on two more occasions.

When Manoj was in jail in 2007, he struck friendship with Parveen. On his release from jail in 2008, Parveen helped Manoj to escape from the custody of Haryana Police. The two then joined hands and were allegedly involved in several cases of auto-theft.

Manoj again escaped from the custody of the Haryana Police on June 20 last year while he was being taken to Bhondsi Jail after attending a court in Saket.

He managed to give the slip to the Delhi Police in May 2009 when a team intercepted him at Sector 22 Rohini..
